Hi Jason,

Unfortunately no. Sleep was a feature introduced with Windows Vista. Windows XP can standby or hibernate, but there is no sleep feature. All this means is that if the laptop is set to standby, and is left for weeks in this state, the battery life may finally expire and the computer will shut down. Any unsaved work will be lost. This is, of course a very rare situation however. So its not a huge loss not having the sleep feature in XP. Hope this answers the question.

Regards,
Colin.

Hi JAmes,

Thanks for your expertise. Indeed, a blown Diode or Capacitor is a tell-tale sign of motherboard failure. That dark brown substance that you are referring to is the electrolyte oozing from the capacitor. A dying motherboard can cause random behaviour before a complete failure occurs.

Cheers,
Colin.

Hi john schlachta,

You can send a text message to your home computer via email. Instead of inputting a phone number as the recipient, input your home email address instead. That way you will get the message on your computer.

Regards,
Colin.

Hi Ethel,

It is truly a wonderful service. Whether you are buying or selling, Kijiji is a free way to reach the audience and find what you are after. Plus there is always a tonne of free stuff that people just want to get rid of.

See you around,
Colin.

Hi Tim,

Great of you to leave us your thoughts.

Education would definitely be a factor into the lack of maintenance performed on the average computer. I think its about perception too; many don't see a computer as a machine that requires maintenance... For whatever reason. As a comparison, there are many people who don't know the first thing about their vehicle. Even though there is a lack of education about the vehicle, there is still inherent wisdom that exists, along the lines of: I know this vehicle won't last forever... it will soon break down... and need to be serviced by a mechanic. Back to computers now... this wisdom does not seem to exist on the whole. Unfortunately many have had to experience this the hard way, and like you said... many times, it is too late for the data.

Cheers,
Colin.

I couldn't agree with you more. People are storing precious memories on their computers and yet many don't take the time to care for their computers. It's an educational thing I guess. People don't learn until something bad happens and many times it's too late.

Great blog.

What you might do when computer is off, get a small magnifing glass and check the diodes on the MB. See if it looks like the top might be a light to dark brown or if it looks like the top has ruptured, this will cause the problem discribed....Take it to a good repair shop or replace the MB. You could also replace it yourself if you feel you are good at soldering.....Not really that hard.....
