Macintosh Vs. Windows
Most people, irrespective of their technological skill, are familiar in some way with Microsoft’s Windows operating system. It has been included with most new PC’s for 15+ years. Windows users are often curious about their main rival - Apples Macintosh. Many of my clients ask me the differences between the 2 computers, and have inspired me to write this post.
Apples Macintosh computer was debuted on January 24, 1984 as the first commercially successful personal computer to utilize a mouse, and a graphical user interface (point and click). Up until a few years ago, Apples operating system only ran on “special” Apple hardware (proprietary to Apple). Then in 2006, Apple began to sell their computers using Intel hardware. This is the same Intel hardware that Windows runs on. So, both operating systems operate on essentially the same “guts”. The latest Macintosh operating system is called the OS X Leopard. On the other hand, the latest Windows version is called Vista.
Everything you can do on a Mac, you can also do with Windows. The only thing you cannot do with a Mac is play the latest and greatest video games - this must be done using Windows, as Microsoft is largely a front-runner in the video game industry. You will also have a larger selection of software to choose from if you operate a Windows system.
Apples operating system is largely used by the graphic design industry. It has risen as the best choice for performing digital manipulations with both image and video. If you’re planning on getting into this field of work, start learning about Mac’s. Else, you can get away with using the more popular Windows operating system.
You will pay more for a Mac than for a Windows based PC. This is also true for servicing as there are less techies who specialize on Mac’s. If you are on a tight budget, a Windows based computer makes more “cents”.
Mac takes the cake when it comes to security. Their software is slightly better than windows at blocking viruses and spyware from infiltrating the system. But its real advantage exists surprisingly, because it is less popular. Malware is created with the intent on affecting as many computers as possible. If you were programming a virus, what operating system would you go after? 90% of personal computers use Windows, so that should answer your question.
CONCLUSION
Windows Advantages
- More software available
- Best system for Hardcore Video Gamers
- Cheaper to purchase and service
Macintosh Advantages
- Now running on Intel hardware
- Great for graphic design
- More secure
