I think its about perception too; many don't see a computer as a machine that requires maintenance... For whatever reason. As a comparison, there are many people who don't know the first thing about their vehicle. Even though there is a lack of education about the vehicle, there is still inherent wisdom that exists, along the lines of: I know this vehicle won't last forever... it will soon break down... and need to be serviced by a mechanic. Back to computers now... this wisdom does not seem to exist on the whole. Unfortunately many have had to experience this the hard way, and like you said... many times, it is too late for the data. People are storing precious memories on their computers and yet many don't take the time to care for their computers. It's an educational thing I guess.
